It was great to once again be painting at Vizcaya in Miami, the Italian Renaissance home and gardens of James Deering. With this little painting I wanted to suggest the movement of the brilliant sunlight as it illuminated the splendor of the setting...

A Touch of Chipotle Orange...

I always try to have my camera ready when I am and out about...I shot my reference photo for this painting while having lunch at The Legal Seafood Test Kitchen in Boston. I was attracted to the backlighting, the gesture of the waiter and the great reflections in the bar.. It was another opportunity to play with the movement in the light..

 Shaded Bougainvillea
8x8, Oil/Canvas Panel

Markham Park
8x8, Oil/Canvas Panel

Last week I had the pleasure of painting outdoors with Eden Compton again... We met on a beautiful sunny morning in the Las Olas area of Fort Lauderdale where I did Shaded Bougainvillea. The next morning, overcast, we went to Markham Park where the sun, dancing in and out, kept both of us chasing the light. Even with the mixed weather it was great to be out with such a good painting partner as Eden...

Sweet Temptations
24x30, Oil/Canvas

I noticed the grids that are developing in the backgrounds of my last two Carnival Paintings... the stuffed animals in Take A Chance and the balloons in Player. I want to explore that idea using simple imagery.... The first being the doughnuts used here in Sweet Temptations. I expect balloons to follow, maybe toys and some of the other treats you would find at a Carnival. In the meantime, I will be playing around with the doughnuts in a few more paintings with different non-grid compositions...

Big Cypress Moon

SOLD
30x40, Oil/Canvas
Collection Loxahatchee Club, Jupiter, Florida

I recently went to Big Cypress National Preserve for the first time... We were there for a day and did not even begun to sink our little toe into the beauty of nature to be found in this great swamp of the Everglades. It seemed alligators were lining every dirt road and canal and the variety of water birds was endless... I can not wait to go there for some plein air work.
Big Cypress Moon is a studio piece I did from reference photos...

New Year's Tradition

Self Portrait, 1-1-2012
Pastel/Wallis Paper

It is my tradition to do a self portrait on the first day of each New Year... It keeps a check on my progress as well as the roadmap of my face and is a nice way to ensure I spend a few hours dedicated to painting as a new year begins....

The Bad Blogger Returns....

Self Profile 1-25-2012
20x16, Oil/Oil Primed Canvas Panel

My name is Greg and I have been a bad blogger... 2 retina tears repaired and 2 eye surgeries (L & R ) later, I have nothing to complain about now that everything is returning to a clear view. It's not just my vision that is focused, so let's get on with catching up.. in no particular order...

This is a self portrait sketch I did using two mirrors set up to reflect my profile. I did it outdoors facing North and used the Anders Zorn limited palette for flesh tones of Titanium White, Ivory Black, Cadmium Red and Gold Ochre.
