I recently went to Big Cypress National Preserve for the first time... We were there for a day and did not even begun to sink our little toe into the beauty of nature to be found in this great swamp of the Everglades. It seemed alligators were lining every dirt road and canal and the variety of water birds was endless... I can not wait to go there for some plein air work.

It is my tradition to do a self portrait on the first day of each New Year... It keeps a check on my progress as well as the roadmap of my face and is a nice way to ensure I spend a few hours dedicated to painting as a new year begins....

My name is Greg and I have been a bad blogger... 2 retina tears repaired and 2 eye surgeries (L & R ) later, I have nothing to complain about now that everything is returning to a clear view. It's not just my vision that is focused, so let's get on with catching up.. in no particular order...

This is a self portrait sketch I did using two mirrors set up to reflect my profile. I did it outdoors facing North and used the Anders Zorn limited palette for flesh tones of Titanium White, Ivory Black, Cadmium Red and Gold Ochre.
